Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the overall and category-specific effect sizes of community-based group programs for people with severe mental illness. A total of 31 studies including theses, dissertations, and journal articles published between 2001 and 2016 were analyzed. The programs reviewed were divided into three categories: symptom-focused, function-focused, and recovery-focused. The effect size for group programs was .808. Category-specific effect sizes were as follows: symptom-focused (.868), function-focused (.795), and recovery-focused (.801). Additionally, factors related to program conditions had a significant impact on program effectiveness. Specifically, durations of over 13 weeks, session times of over 82 minutes, and group numbers of under 10 members were associated with higher effect sizes. The results of this study have implications for efforts to improve the effectiveness and quality of programs and services for people with severe mental illness.
